1. Al-Fatiha (The Opening)

The name of the first Surah (chapter) of the Quran is Al-Fatiha. This Surah (chapter) serves as the introduction to the Quran, which is why it is termed Surah Fatiha, translating to "Opening" or "Beginning." This Surah (chapter) captures the very essence of the entire Quran. Every day, Muslims recite this during each rakat (unit of prayer) of their Salah (prayer). There are a total of seven ayahs (verses) in this Surah (chapter). When a believer recites this Surah (chapter) during their Salah (prayer), Allah (SWT) responds to each ayah (verse) recited. This Surah (chapter) is frequently referred to as the remedy for all ailments.

2. Al-Baqara (The Cow)

The Surah Al-Baqara is the second chapter of the Qur'an with 286 ayahs (verses). Named "The Cow," it covers various Islamic principles, from stories of prophets to societal guidelines. Notably, it includes Ayatul Kursi, highlighting Allah's (SWT) attributes. The final two ayahs, revealed during the Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) night journey, emphasize Allah's (SWT) mercy and guidance.

3. Aali Imran (the Family of Imran)

The third Surah or chapter of the Qur'an, titled 'The Family of Imran', comprises 200 ayahs or verses. It delves into the story of Imran's wife, the mother of Maryam (AS), who subsequently became the mother of Isa (Jesus, AS). When Jibreel (Gabriel, AS) delivered the news to Maryam (AS) about her miraculous conception, it was met with astonishment. Isa (AS) showcased numerous miracles and preached to the Bani Israel (Children of Israel), yet faced considerable opposition. Before any harm could befall him, Allah (SWT) elevated him. The Surah underscores the belief in prophets like Ibrahim (Abraham, AS) and Muhammad (SAW). It chronicles historical events like the battles of Badr and Uhud. Its core message affirms that true guidance is inherent in Islam, designating Mecca as the focal point of worship, emphasizing the paramount importance of adhering to Allah's (SWT) decrees.

4. An-Nisa’ (the Women)

The fifth Surah or chapter of the Quran, Al-Ma’idah (The Table), comprises 120 ayahs or verses. It highlights pivotal Islamic teachings and principles. This Surah emphasizes the significance of upholding promises and clearly distinguishes between halal (permitted) and haram (forbidden). It recognizes Islam as the ultimate religious guidance, detailing the allowance of certain foods and intermarriage with the People of the Book. Significantly, this Surah recounts the tales of Isa (Jesus) (AS) and Mariam (Mary) (AS), cautioning against idolizing Isa. 8. Al-Anfal (the Spoils of War)

Surah Al-Anfal, translated as "The Spoils of War", is the 8th chapter of the Holy Qur'an and comprises 75 verses. Identified as a "Medinan surah", its verses predominantly chronicle the Battle of Badr. This battle marks the inaugural confrontation between Muslims and the disbelievers, ensuing after thirteen years of Muslims' steadfastness. In this pivotal moment, Muslims were graced with divine support, resulting in a triumphant outcome. The ninth Surah or chapter, "At-Taubah", of the Holy Qur'an encompasses 129 ayahs or verses and is a Medinan revelation from the later period. Uniquely, it does not commence with the customary “Bismillah”. This Surah is associated with the Expedition of Tabuk, which took place in the 9th Hijri year. Additionally, it is often referred to as "Bara’at" due to the believers' disassociation from the polytheists following violated treaties. This chapter classifies polytheists, hypocrites, and believers, providing guidance on their interactions. It highlights the potential for repentance and underscores the pursuit of Allah's (SWT) mercy, offering hope and solace to the believers. 10. Yunus (Yunus)

Yunus (AS), the Arabic name for "Jonas" or "Jonah," is the title of the 10th surah (chapter) in the Holy Qur'an, with 109 ayat (verses). Classified as a Meccan surah, its central themes include the oneness of God, the Qur’an's authenticity, and addressing those skeptical of revelation. The surah aims to evoke reverence in non-believers by magnifying the grandeur of Allah's (SWT) creation and the fleeting nature of life, while also drawing attention to the hereafter.

11. Hud (Hud)

"Hud" (AS) is the title of the 11th surah (chapter) in the Holy Qur'an, comprising 123 ayat (verses). It is closely linked to the Prophet Hud (AS) and falls under the category of early Meccan surahs. The surah assures believers of paradise as a reward while alerting to Allah's (SWT) punishment for disbelief and misconduct. Central Islamic principles such as monotheism (tawhid), the role of prophets, and the concept of resurrection are prominently discussed. Surah Hud accentuates the importance of holding steadfast faith, leading a righteous life, and the consequences of neglecting the divine directives.

12. Yusuf (Yusuf)

Yusuf (AS), equivalent to 'Joseph' in English, represents the 12th surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, encompassing 111 ayat (verses). Revealed during the later stages of the Meccan era, this surah imparts deep insights about patience, reliance on Allah (SWT), and enduring perseverance in times of trials and treacheries. Surah Yusuf urges the faithful to express gratitude for Allah's (SWT) myriad blessings and to achieve contentment with His divine decrees. The surah also highlights that fervently desired worldly gains might become detrimental if they divert our attention from the remembrance of Allah (SWT).

13. Ar- Ra’d (The Thunder)

Ar-Ra'd means "The Thunder". It is the 13th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an, composed of 43 verses (ayat). This Surah was revealed during the last stage of the Prophet's residence in Mecca. The opening ayah focuses on the primary topic of this sūrah: "The Message of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the undeniable Truth, yet it is due to the shortcomings of the people that they are rejecting it." Besides this, the sūrah also addresses the opponents and their objections, and the Devotees, who had been undergoing trials and were growing weary. The Devotees are reminded that by patiently waiting for Allah's help, they have been strengthened and filled with hope and courage. The significant issues, divine laws, and guidance provided in the discourse can be summarized as follows:

1. The Qur'an is a revelation from Allah.
2. Trees, fruits, and vegetables are among the signs of Allah.
3. Allah never changes the condition of a people unless they are willing to change themselves.
4. Those who do not heed the call of Allah will find no escape from hellfire.
5. It is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find tranquility.
6. Prophets (Rasools) have no power to perform any miracle except by the will of Allah.

14. Sura Ebrahim (Prophet Abraham)

Ibrahim, an Arabic equivalent of "Abraham," is the 14th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an with 52 verses (ayat). In terms of its timing and contextual background of revelation, it is a "Meccan Surah". This Surah serves as a warning and admonition to the disbelievers who were rejecting the message of Muhammad and devising cunning plans to thwart his mission. However, censure, condemnation, and rebuke dominate the warnings. This is because a significant amount of admonition had already been given in the preceding Surahs, but in response, their obstinacy, animosity, opposition, mischief, persecution, and so on had only intensified.

15. Al-Hijr (the Rocky Tract)

Surah Al-Hijr is the 15th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur’an. The surah's title in English means “The Stoneland”, and it consists of 99 verses (ayat). Regarding the timing and contextual background of the revelation, it is an earlier Meccan surah. Though the main topics of the surah are diverse, it doesn't mean that this Surah lacks admonition and instructions. As a matter of fact, the Qurʾān never confines itself to mere warnings; it goes beyond rebuke and censure and provides guidance wherever appropriate. Accordingly, this Surah contains brief arguments for Tauhid on the one hand and admonition in the story of Adam and Satan on the other.

16. An-Nahl (the Bees)

An-Nahl, which means "The Bee", is the 16th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an, consisting of 128 verses (ayat). It is named after honey bees, which are mentioned in verse 68, and draws a comparison between the industry and adaptability of honey bees and that of man. This is an earlier "Meccan surah". This Surah presents compelling proofs of Tawhid and refutations of shirk, using evident signs in the universe and man's own creation. It addresses the objections of the disbelievers, refuting their arguments and dispelling their doubts. The Surah warns of the consequences of persisting in falsehoods and outlines the moral transformations required in practical human life. It informs the mushrikin that the belief in Allah, which they also professed, should not remain mere lip service but should manifest in moral and practical life. Finally, it offers guidance to the Prophet and his companions about the stance they should take in the face of antagonism and persecution from disbelievers.

17. Al-Isra: The Night Journey (The Night Journey)

Also known as Bani Israil. It is the 17th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an with 111 verses (ayat). The word Isra' refers to the Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad (S). This sura is part of a series of al-musabbihat surahs because it begins with the glorification of Allah.

Regarding the timing and contextual background of the believed revelation, it is an earlier "Meccan Surah". This Surah emphasizes important moral and Islamic principles for Muslims to abide by. Without the guidance of Allah, humans end up in evil, sin, and misery. Surah Isra also discusses the evils of pride and arrogance and urges human beings to reflect on Allah’s signs and be humble in prayers.

Surah Isra is a very comprehensive surah that contains:

1. The Prophet’s night journey and ascension into the heavens.
2. Prophecy about the corruption of Bani Israel on earth.
3. Respecting parents.
4. The human being as the noblest creation of Allah.
5. The Quran as a cure for believers.
6. The inimitability of the Quran.

18. Al-Kahf (the Cave)

Al-Kahf, which translates to 'The Cave,' represents the 18th surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, containing 110 ayat (verses). Revealed during the Meccan period, this surah intricately narrates four significant historical tales, each illustrating valuable lessons for believers:

1. The story of the people of the cave: This is a testament to the enduring and unwavering faith of young men who sought refuge in a cave to escape religious persecution, demonstrating the challenges to one's faith.
2. The account of the man with two gardens: This narrative delves into the potential pitfalls of wealth and arrogance, emphasizing gratitude towards Allah (SWT) and the transient nature of worldly possessions.
3. The journey of Musa (AS) and Al-Khidr: Highlighting the vastness and varying dimensions of knowledge, this tale underscores the importance of humility and recognizing the limitations of one's understanding.
4. The chronicles of Dhul Qarnayn: Illustrating the responsible and righteous use of power, this narrative focuses on the leadership of a just king, emphasizing the importance of using authority for the good of humanity and in service to Allah (SWT).

51. Adz-Dzariyah (the Scatterers)

Surah Az-Zariyat, translating to 'The Winnowing Winds,' is the 51st surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, spanning 60 ayat (verses). It begins with an emphasis on the winnowing winds, drawing attention to the precision of Allah's (SWT) creation. The chapter delves into the divine signs within the human body and the universe, urging believers to reflect and recognize God's magnificence. Past civilizations like Aad, Thamud, and Pharaoh serve as cautionary tales of deviation and consequences. Vivid portrayals of the Day of Judgment accentuate the inevitable reckoning and the transient nature of earthly life. The surah consistently emphasizes faith, reflection, and accountability before Allah (SWT).

53. An-Najm (the Star)

The 53rd chapter of the Holy Qur'an, An-Najm ("The Star"), is a Meccan Surah comprised of 62 verses. The surah opens with an oath by Allah (God), swearing by the stars as they descend beneath the horizon, to affirm that Muhammad (SAW) is indeed His awaited Messenger. The main theme is to warn the disbelievers in Makkah about their erroneous attitude toward the Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Contrary to what skeptics claim, Muhammad (SAW) is neither deluded nor a fabricator. His (SAW) teachings stem from divine revelations, not personal conjecture. He (SAW) has personally witnessed great signs of Allah (SWT), substantiating that his message is divinely inspired.

54. Al-Qamar (the Moon)

The 54th chapter of the Holy Qur'an, Al-Qamar ("The Moon"), consists of 55 verses and warns Makkah's disbelievers about rejecting the message of Muhammad (SAW). It discusses the miraculous splitting of the moon as evidence of the Resurrection, an event dismissed by skeptics as magic. The surah states that such disbelievers will only believe at the time of Resurrection. Brief accounts of Noah (Nuh), 'Ad, Thamud, Lot (Lut), and Pharaoh (Fir'on) serve as cautionary tales, highlighting the punishments for ignoring divine warnings through Allah's (SWT) Prophets. The surah aims to be a stark reminder of the consequences of disbelief.

55. Ar-Rahman (the Most Gracious)

Ar-Rahman, signifying "The Merciful," is the 55th surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, comprised of 78 ayat (verses). Revealed in Medina, this surah enumerates Allah's (SWT) myriad blessings and benevolence. The surah unfolds in three distinct segments. Initially, it marvels at the natural manifestations of Allah's creative prowess and mercy, highlighting the blessings bestowed upon earth's inhabitants. Subsequently, the narrative transitions to depict the Day of Judgment (qiyamah), elucidating the severe retribution awaiting transgressors. Concludingly, it paints a vivid picture of the exquisite rewards in paradise (jannah) reserved for the devout and righteous.

56. Al-Waqi’ah (the Event)

Surah Al-Waqi'a, which translates to "The Inevitable," is the 56th surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, encompassing 96 ayat (verses). Revealed in Makkah roughly 7 years prior to the Hijrah, its dominant theme revolves around the afterlife. The surah elucidates the divergent fates awaiting souls in the Hereafter, illustrating the bounteous rewards in paradise (jannah) for the believers and delineating the dire punishments in hell (jahannam) reserved for the transgressors. The chapter serves as a vivid reminder of the impending realities of the Day of Judgment.

59. Al-Hashr (the Gathering)

Al-Hashr means "The Exile". It is the 59th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an and comprises 24 verses (ayat). The chapter derives its name, al-hashr, from the word "hashr", meaning 'exile' or 'banishment', which appears in verse 2, describing the expulsion of the Jewish Banu Nadir tribe from their settlements. It is a "Medinan surah". One distinctive feature of Surah Hashr is that both its beginning and end glorify Allah.

1. The narrative of the Jews of Banu Nadir, who breached their covenant with the Muslims, leading to their banishment from Medina.
2. Laws regarding wealth that Muslims obtained without waging war.
3. Reproaching the hypocrites by the Muslims and exposing their covert activities.
4. Depicting the endeavors of the Immigrants, or the Muhajirun, and lauding their sacrifices.
5. The elucidation of Allah’s attributes of beauty and majesty towards the surah's conclusion.

57. Al-Hadid (the Iron)

Surah (Chapter) Al-Hadid (Iron), the 57th chapter of the Holy Qur'an, consists of 29 verses (ayat). The name of the chapter is derived from the term "Iron," which is mentioned in the 25th verse. This surah belongs to the category of Al Musabbihat, as it commences with the glorification of Allah (SWT). Revealed in Medina, it holds significance in encouraging Muslims to contribute to the cause of Allah (SWT). During a crucial period of Islam's history, facing a life-and-death struggle against Arab paganism, Surah Al-Hadid was revealed to urge believers to make financial sacrifices and comprehend that Islam transcends mere verbal declarations and superficial rituals. Its core theme is sincere devotion to Allah (SWT) and His faith. Individuals who prioritized personal gain over Allah (SWT) and His faith were deemed insincere by Allah (SWT).

58. Al-Mujadilah (the Reasoning)

Al-Mujādilah means "She who disputed" or "The Pleading Woman." It is the 58th chapter (surah) of the Holy Qur'an, consisting of 22 verses (ayat), and was revealed in Medina. The chapter primarily addresses the legality of the pre-Islamic divorce practice known as zihar. The term "She who disputes" pertains to a woman who approached Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to highlight the injustice of this method. The opening verses of the chapter declare zihar unlawful and provide instructions for addressing past instances of zihar. Allah (SWT) revealed the first five verses of Surah Al-Mujādilah to address this matter, stipulating an expiation for the oath and allowing the couple to reconcile. The surah also addresses the protocol for individuals of means to privately converse with Prophet Muhammad (SAW), necessitating sadaqah (charitable giving) before such meetings. Additionally, the surah discusses those who remain steadfast in their allegiance to Allah (SWT), refraining from supporting the enemies of Allah, even if they are family or close relatives.

63. Al-Munafiqun (the Hypocrites)

Munafiqun, translating to "hypocrites," is the 63rd surah of the Holy Qur'an. As a Medinan Surah, it sheds light on the animosity hypocrites held towards Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The surah is divided into two parts: the first eight verses dissect the hypocrites' nature, revealing their deep-seated craving for worldly pleasures. The concluding trio of verses warns Muslims not to let wealth or family divert them from Allah (SWT) [God]. If they fail to utilize their wealth in Allah's (SWT) path now, they'll face profound regret at life's end, a moment when such remorse will offer no solace.

64. Al-Taghabun (the Loss & Gain)

At-Taghabun translates to "Loss, Deprivation." It is the 64th surah of the Holy Qur'an with 18 ayahs (verses). Classified as a Medinan surah, it commences with words extolling Allah's (SWT) [God] magnificence and is part of the Al-Musabbihat group. The surah begins by spotlighting Allah's (SWT) unparalleled power, wisdom, and omniscience. The title stems from “the day of dispossession” (yawm al-taghabun) cited in verse 9. Verses 3 and 4 emphasize that Allah (SWT), the Creator, possesses knowledge of all. Verses 5 and 6 remind disbelievers of past disbelievers' fate, while verse 7 counters the denial of Resurrection. The subsequent three ayahs advocate belief in Allah (SWT) and His Apostle, Prophet Muhammad (SAW). From verses 11 to 13, the narrative underscores Allah's (SWT) sovereignty and the essence of trust in Him. Verses 14 to 18 encourage Muslims to prioritize devotion to Allah (SWT) over worldly affiliations. Lastly, verses 8 and 16 call for unwavering faith and charity in Allah's (SWT) path.

65. At-Talaq (the Divorce)

At-Talaq translates to "Divorce." It's the 65th surah of the Holy Quran with 12 ayahs (verses). Identified as a "Medinan Surah", it concerns the time and context of Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) life in Medina. The surah is primarily bifurcated into two sections. The initial seven ayahs (verses) address divorce, its associated rules, and intricacies, giving the chapter its name, Talaq. The latter half delineates the destinies of two distinct groups: those who defy Allah's (SWT) [God] commands, destined for harsh retribution, and those who, due to their righteous actions and adherence to Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) teachings, are promised divine guidance and celestial rewards.p> ✖

The essential theme of this surah is the importance of adhering to the boundaries and limits set by Allah (SWT) [God], especially during moments of deep affection and intimacy. The emphasis is clear: mere associations or affiliations, even with the most esteemed and revered personalities, won't provide any advantage in spiritual matters

67. Al-Mulk – (The Kingdom)

Surah Al Mulk, translated as "The Sovereignty" or "Kingship," is the 67th surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur'an, comprising 30 ayat (verses). Revealed in Mecca, this chapter underscores Allah's (SWT) unparalleled authority and dominion over the entire cosmos. It accentuates that no entity can challenge or rival His immense power. Additionally, the surah provides insights into the dire outcomes awaiting those who reject the divine truth and highlights the transient and ephemeral nature of worldly supremacy. This surah serves as a poignant reminder of the grandeur of Allah (SWT) and the ultimate reality of life and the Hereafter.

97. Al-Qadr – (Power" or "Fate)

Surah Al-Qadr is the 97th chapter (surah) of the Quran, consisting of 5 ayat or verses. The term "Al-Qadr" translates to "Power" or "Fate" in English. This Meccan surah commemorates the night when the first revelation of what would later become the Qur'an was sent down. The chapter is named after the word "al-qadr" mentioned in the first verse. It refers to the revelation of the Holy Qur'an on the Night of Honor and subsequently emphasizes the significance of this night and the blessings it bestows.

99. Az-Zalzalah (the Earthquake)

Surah Az-Zalzalah, the 99th chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, comprises 8 verses (ayat) and is generally recognized as a Meccan surah. This surah elucidates key Islamic beliefs, particularly life after death and the accountability of one's deeds. The chapter vividly portrays the dramatic events of resurrection and the Day of Judgment, emphasizing that every action, regardless of its size, will be taken into account. It is believed that reciting this surah earns merit equivalent to reciting half of the Qur'an.

102. At-Takathur (the Piling Up)

Surah (Chapter) At-Takasur (Surah 102), consisting of 8 verses (Ayahs), reflects on the competitive materialistic mindset of two Ansar tribes, Bani Haresa and Banil Hars, in Mecca. They vied to glorify their living members and describe elaborate funeral practices for the deceased. In response, Allah (SWT) revealed this surah, admonishing such futile endeavors and stressing the importance of focusing on the eternal afterlife. Named "The Piling Up," the surah underscores life's transience and the need to prioritize spiritual growth over materialistic pursuits, guiding believers toward a more meaningful existence.

103. Al-‘Asr (the Time)

Surah Asr is the 103rd Surah of the Holy Quran, revealed in Mecca, and translates as "The Time" with just 3 verses. It outlines the well-being, success, and potential pitfalls humans face over time. Four qualities for salvation are emphasized: faith, righteous deeds, advising each other truthfully, and promoting patience. Imam Shafi'i remarked that contemplation on this Surah alone is sufficient for guidance.

104. Al-Humazah (the Slanderer)

Surah Al-Humazah, the 104th chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, translates to "The Slanderer." Comprising a handful of verses (ayat), it was revealed in Mecca. The surah addresses issues related to slander, verbal harm, and backbiting. It was a revelation that presented the inhabitants of Mecca with insights about Paradise (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam), underscoring the repercussions of their deeds. Consequently, this chapter led them to cease their debates concerning Jannah and Jahannam, making them realize the gravity of their actions in the eyes of Allah (SWT).

105. Al-Fil (the Elephant)
